⭐Title: Jones-Ray effect and the negative zeta potential of the air-water interface
⭐Abstract:
The surface tension of electrolytes exhibits a characteristic minimum at the concentration of approximately 1mM, which is known as the Jones-Ray effect. The reason for the Jones-Ray effect has not been fully understood, and we propose that charged impurities induce the Jones-Ray effect. We show that the thermodynamical model quantitatively reproduces the minima of the previous experiments using different levels of water purity [1]. We also perform the experiment of intentional addition of ionic surfactants, and the agreement of theory and experiment is perfect [2]. In the end, we discuss the relation between the negative zeta potential of hydrophobic surfaces and the impurity effect [3].
